FRANKFORT, Ky. — Unemployment rates fell in 88 Kentucky counties between January 2006 and January 2007, rose in 26 counties and stayed the same in six counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training in the Education Cabinet.

Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the commonwealth at 4 percent. Other counties with low unemployment rates were Fayette County, 4.2 percent; Warren County, 4.7 percent; Madison and Scott counties, 4.9 percent each; Jessamine County, 5 percent; Bourbon and Franklin counties, 5.1 percent each; and Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties, 5.2 percent each.

Jackson County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 14.4 percent. It was followed by Clay and Magoffin counties, 12.5 percent each; Wolfe County, 11.8 percent; Owsley County, 11.5 percent; McCreary County, 11.4 percent; Menifee County, 11.1 percent; Muhlenberg County, 11 percent; Morgan County, 10.6 percent; and Bath County, 10.4 percent.

Overall, the number of Kentucky counties with an unemployment rate at or above 10 percent remained the same in January 2007 as compared to January 2006, when 10 counties had a jobless rate at or above 10 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics in this news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisons between United States, state and counties figures.
