FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2007) – Kentuckians throughout the commonwealth will celebrate their rich archival heritage during the sixth annual Kentucky Archives Week, Oct. 7-13. This year’s theme is leisure.
There are almost 300 archival and manuscript repositories in Kentucky that hold archival records, such as personal papers, photographs, diaries, letters and government records documenting the state’s history and leisure activities. Many of these institutions are hosting open houses, exhibits, special programs and speakers to highlight historical materials available for research in Kentucky archival and manuscript repositories. October is American Archives Month, and Kentucky Archives Week is part of that celebration.
In honor of Kentucky Archives Week, the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives will host three “Lunch and Learn” talks:
• October 9 – Lisa Thompson will speak on “Dr. William Sutton and Kentucky’s First Vital Statistics Law.”
• October 10 - James Prichard will speak on “Jesse James in Kentucky: Fact, Fiction and Folklore.”
• October 11 – Walter Bowman will speak on “Changing Times and Landscapes: Public Records and Eastern European Immigration in the Big Sandy and Cumberland Valleys.”
Each talk will begin at noon in the Conference Room at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, 300 Coffee Tree Road in Frankfort. Participants are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch. Dessert and coffee will be provided.
